KIND-hearted donors have smashed fundraising targets set up in honour of a popular Applecross community stalwart who drowned at sea last year.

Friends and family of Alasdair Macleod donned kilts and woolly jumpers – clothing the fisherman was fond of – and packed into Clachan Church on Friday for a service celebrating the 57-year-old’s life.

He died in November while creel fishing on his boat Varuna. The vessel was found aground on rocks on November 20, sparking a major search of the local area.

His body was found on the shore at Staffin on Skye on December 9. It is thought he fell overboard while returning from his day at sea.

A crowdfunding page was set up in his honour, and its initial goal of £2000 was broken after people flocked to donate to show how much he meant to them. At the last count more than £4300 had already been raised for two causes close to Mr Macleod’s heart – and with fundraising remaining open until January 27, there’s still scope for the figure to rise even further.

The causes set to receive the cash are the Applecross Community Company – the development trust which serves the Applecross peninsula – and the Scottish Creel Fishermen’s Federation.

Mr Macleod had a long association with both causes. He served as a director on the community company for a number of years and inspired the work behind the community hydro power scheme. And he was a founder member of the fishermen’s federation, which was formed in 2012 to give creel fisherment a national voice.
