A community food larder in North Kessock now has a fridge which will increase the variety of food which can be shared.

The food larder run by Residents Association North Kessock (RANK) and Kessock Kindness originally opened in Autumn 2020 temporarily using the local church garden shed. A new purpose-built shed was constructed and is being hosted by Knockbain Free Church at the rear exterior wall of the church.

A milestone was reached this month as the new shed was connected to the church's electricity supply. This has allowed a working fridge to be used in the larder which increases the variety of food which can be shared and accessed 24 hours a day.

RANK were further delighted to welcome the commitment from four local businesses who have offered to donate goods that they are unable to sell but are still in good condition to eat. They receive other 'fareshare' goods via Highland Council. So far there is a team of eight volunteers helping regularly and others who help on an ad hoc basis.

They also purchase a regular local veg box, eggs and basics from the local shop.

Vice-chair of RANK Anne Thomas welcomed the milestone saying "It's great to have this facility in the village which is being well used. It's been a really good team effort."

Rev Farquhar Renwick said: "Knockbain Free Church are glad to be able to help out in this community initiative by providing a location for the new shed as well as provide an electricity supply for the fridge. I'm pleased to hear the larder has been well used and I'm sure the newly connected fridge and food donations from local businesses will help people in the village".

Highlands & Islands Enterprise had originally provided funding to set up the scheme through the Black Isle Partnership as part of Covid--19 community resilience funding from the Scottish Government.

Anyone who is able to join a rota to help stock and clean the larder should contact board@residentsnorthkessock.com Donations can be made via their website https://residentsnorthkessock.org/
