Drivers in the Highlands are being urged to take extra care on roads with heavy rain and possible flooding forecast for tonight.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for severe downpours over a 12-hour period through the night from 8pm this evening.

Areas likely to be worst-hit include Inverness, the A82 along the north-west shore of Loch Ness, the Black Isle, parts of Ross-shire, and stretches of the A9 north to Caithness and Sutherland.

A spokesman for the weather agency said: “We’re expecting a wet evening and a night with some disruption from rainfall is likely.”
