AN Easter Ross gymnastics club is today marking a milestone as it celebrates the first anniversary in purpose-built premises.

Fyrish Gymnastics Club in Alness is visited on a weekly basis by more than 700 participants from 18 months of age up to adults in their 50s.

It is marking its achievements, which followed years of community effort, at a party at its premises today.

Sonny Rhind, a long-standing coach at the club who has helped drive its growing success, said: “Every week the club delivers 1300 hours of activities and this helps make Alness the fit capital of the Highlands, a dream I have held since I started at the Averon Centre.”

He said the young team of coaches is growing in knowledge and experience with the hard work being recognised with some impressive performances at competitions.

Amongst the latest was success in the Scottish Floor and Vault Summer competition. There was a haul of medals and the icing on the cake was in the 11-year-olds team gold medal. There was also an almost perfect score for Heidi Dwyer in the beginners competition.

Outwith the gym the club is available to visit schools and deliver gymnastics sessions – or for the more daring parkour which is increasingly popular.

Bridgend Primary in Alness is amongst the schools to have got involved in this outreach work in recent weeks.
