THERE were more authors than you could throw a book at when a special local event opened its doors at the weekend.

Organisers of Nigg Book Fair attracted no fewer than 17 authors to make an appearance.

Debbie Mathews Ross, who helped organise the event, said: “A sprinkle of people started to arrive before everyone had set up and that sprinkle became, if not a torrent, then at least a definite flow - strong and pretty much continuous for the entire event. The kitchen were rushed off their feet supplying tea, coffees, cakes and later, soup for the stallholders.

“We had authors from previous years visiting, representatives from the St Duthac Book and Arts Festival, as well as locals and folk on holiday. It was buzzy with books and blether. All the authors sold books and everyone was delighted with the event. Fara Sutherland, the youngest author, sold lots of her book Don’t Litter Rubbish and said it was ‘a very special day’ for her. In truth it was a special day for everyone, with folk able to mix and chat books and writing in a warm and friendly environment – very different to the cautious event of last year.”

As a bonus this year, a group from Fèis the Music, who support Fèis Rois, played outdoors and ably entertained everyone, raising funds to support traditional art in Gaelic.

Some £270 was raised from table fees, second-hand book sales and donations for refreshment and that goes to Nigg Community Hall funds.
