A NEW project will tell folklore tales of mermaids, giants and witches from the comfort of Hugh Miller’s cottage in Cromarty.

The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) created the Fireside Tales, narrated by Lizzie McDougall, as part of 2022’s Year of Stories.

Ms McDougall filmed the series in the 19th century geologist and folklorist’s historic Birthplace Cottage and Museum – a site managed by the NTS.

She reads stories from the book Scenes and Legends of the North of Scotland, drawn from folklore around Cromarty and the Moray Firth, including The Baby Giant of Knockfarrel and Giant Steps in Ross-shire.

The narrations are accompanied by music from harpist Siannie Moodie, and the film made by company Flying Mirrors.

Katey Boal, the Trust’s visitor services manager engagement at Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre, said: “We hope that these stories on our website are enjoyed by all and that we can bring a smile to the faces of many, introducing audiences to the fascinating folklore of this beautiful part of Scotland.”

This event has been with funding delivered by VisitScotland, Museums Galleries Scotland and the National Lottery. To enjoy the talks, go to www.nts.org.uk/stories/fireside-tales-scottish-folklore-for-children
