FIRE crews and farmers and forestry workers were yesterday afternoon making good progress in bringing a wildfire near Kyle of Lochalsh under control with assistance of a helicopter brought in to water bomb the flames.

The main fire area is in hills above Erbusaig north of Kyle.

The alarm was raised to the huge outbreak around 10.20am on Wednesday, and several crews went to the scene.

Because of the extent of the fire and the length of time fighting it, exhausted crews have been used in rotation.

Volunteer units even came across from the east coast at Cromarty, and from Spean Bridge to help.

Around nine fire units were in attendance including from Kyle, Broadford, Portree, Dunvegan, Lochcarron.

The operation was put on hold during darkness last night, but resumed at 5.30am today. (Thu)

Scottish Fire and Rescue control room said that there were no reports of dwellings or other buildings being affected.

He added: "The latest message received indicated they were make good progress and getting the fire under control."

Conditions in parts of the Highlands are currently at high risk following a dry spell and with winter vegetation like tinder.
