FEARS are growing for a 34-year-old man missing after a Wester Ross canoeing incident which has left three children “serious” in hospital.

Emergency services were scrambled to deal with the water incident in the Coulas Beag area of water just off the Big Sands caravan site in Gairloch on Sunday afternoon.

The incident, which happened around 4.15pm, involved a Canadian canoe which had two male adults and four children aboard.

Northern Constabulary said in a statement on Sunday night that one 34-year-old man is currently missing.

Coastguard and lifeboats have been searching in the area for him.

A 10-year-old girl managed to swim to shore and raise the alarm.

The second adult, a 36-year-old man, was also able to swim to safety. The other three children - a five-year-old girl, five-year-old boy and three-year-old boy - were rescued from the water by coastguard helicopter personnel.

The 10-year-old girl who swam ashore was not injured.
