FAST action by Highland Council transport officials got hundreds of pupils to school on time today after the company that ran the buses ceased trading with only a few hours’ notice.

Andrew’s (Shetland) Ltd had 13 contracts serving school bus routes for high schools in Invergordon, Dornoch, Golspie, Thurso and Wick, as well as some of their associated primaries.

There were fears up to 400 pupils could be left in the lurch and parents were notified after the company contacted the council saying it was going out of business – giving less than 24 hours’ notice.

But the council’s transport team worked overtime and managed to avoid disruption to pupils and parents.

A council spokeswoman said transport officials worked “very late in the evening and very early in the morning” to get other bus companies to do the routes.
