Inverness actress Karen Gillan may be back in Doctor Who – returning to her first major breakthrough role as Amy Pond – for the planned series' 60th anniversary special later this year.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy star spoke this week about the possibility of a return to the hit TV series while doing publicity for the release of the Marvel trilogy's Volume 3, last of the Marvel series.

Karen told Radio Times: "It's cool to see that people are still intrigued by Amy Pond and whether she could return."

But she sounded less certain that would be happening when she added: "Maybe, maybe not – I don't know!"

The Jumanji actress has been linked as a returning character for the anniversary special.

Karen joined the TV series in 2010 as the companion to the 11th Doctor played by Matt Smith. The character of Amy Pond first appeared as a little girl, played by Amy's cousin, Caitlin Blackwood.

When the grown-up Amy appeared – in the storyline 12 years later – she played Amy as a kissogram who helps the Doctor save the earth.

The first episode with Karen had a special pre-screening at Eden Court which Karen attended with Matt Smith and Caitlin Blackwood too.

The actress left Doctor Who after three series in 2012, but returned briefly for the 50th anniversary special The Time Of The Doctor the following year.

Apparently Karen isn't scheduled to appear alongside returning cast David Tennant and Catherine Tate in the planned 60th anniversary show.

But some fans have said they think there are clues to Karen's return in a couple of Instagram posts which refer to an "unexpected" project that is "not a movie".

Karen, who is an ambassador for Highland suicide prevention charity Mikeysline, is also being asked about Nebula's future role.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 – which was released in the UK on Wednesday – starring Inverness-born Hollywood star Karen Gillan was audience's most anticipated comedy film for 2023.

On that return, Karen doesn't seems to be saying no.

"I can't imagine it. But it would also be cool," Karen told Radio Times, about Nebula coming back.

"I would love to continue the journey of the character. I don’t know what that would really look like without James [Gunn, director] or Dave [Bautista, co-star], but I really like playing her, so I’m not eager to finish."

What is definite is that Nebula will appear alongside several of the other Guardians in a guest appearance in next year's Thor: Love and Thunder, with further returns possible.

Guardians Of The Galaxy (12A) is in cinemas now.
