THE family of a "Dingwall legend" paid an emotional visit to a new housing development which has been named after him.

Joe Yates Court consists of six new flats for rent in Ross-shire's county town.

Highland Council, which is behind the development, said it was delighted to welcome the family of the late Joe Yates to view the completed housing development that bears his name.

The development forms part of the Scottish Government’s More Homes new-build target and was funded by the Scottish Government and the council.

Mr Yates' family declared themselves very pleased with the result. After a tour of the development they said: “The legacy lives on.Dad was part of Dingwall and now Dingwall part of him. Dingwall was in Dad's heart and now he will forever be in the heart of Dingwall. He would be so proud and glad his name belongs to beautiful flats that will be home to people in Dingwall.”

Local councillor Margaret Paterson, who knew Joe well, said: “It must have been very emotional for the family but at the same time very proud that the beautiful flats have his name. Joe was known and loved by everyone and his name will never be forgotten. He was a legend and one of Dingwall’s beloved sons.”

The flats have been built by Ark Estates with O’Brien Homes.

Managing director of Ark Estate's Willie Gray, said: "We were delighted to recently have the family visit the new flatted development in Dingwall. Joe Yates Court was aptly named after a real Dingwall character and good guy and it was an absolute pleasure to have Joe's family visit and to receive their approval.

“Delivering this much-needed new high-quality housing for Highland Council and to see how well it has been received in the town and by Joe's family makes an already worthwhile project even more satisfying for all concerned."

All the flats have been allocated and tenants hope to move in shortly.

Local reaction to the new development has been positive.

Andrew Macivor posted: "Brilliant to name it after Joe, a true Dingwall legend and it’s so good to have his family there to see the court named after him, well done Highland Council."

Deirdre Henderson observed: "Great to see secure and dry bike parking as part of a new build. Well done to those involved."

barbara McArthur wrote: "Love that it's named after Joe!"
