A CHARITY has been awarded £100,000 from Highland Council towards the cost of building a new visitor centre and restaurant at the Falls of Shin, near Lairg.

The Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust’s bid to the authority’s Capital Discretionary Fund has been approved to support its ambitious £1.2m project.

Building work to replace the fire-ravaged Falls of Shin Visitor Centre could begin as early as the spring if other funds are secured.

The area suffered an estimated drop in visitor numbers of 160,000 per year and 21 jobs were lost when the original building burned down two years ago.

The centre, owned by tycoon and former Harrods boss Mohamed Al-Fayed who has an estate in Easter Ross, was known as the "Harrods of the North".

Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Big Lottery Fund will confirm early in the new year if funding applications worth £1.2m have been approved.
