Education head Jim Steven says the proposal to cut the school day deserves scrutiny.

IGHLAND Council education officials are heading down to Fife early in the new year to examine proposals to shorten the school day.

Jim Steven, head of education at Highland Council, said managers were keen to get an insight into how that authority was progressing with the controversial plan. Parents in that region are currently being consulted and the school day could be reduced early next year.

Other Scottish councils, including Edinburgh City, already operate a reduced school week and Fife Council has spoken to officials there to see how it is working.

The proposal to trim teaching time for Primary 4 to 7 pupils to save £3.2 million was shelved by Highland Council’s ruling administration last month after parents and teachers opposed the move.

The unpopular idea has been put to one side until next year.

Mr Steven said other local authorities in Scotland had gone ahead with the proposal and it deserved some scrutiny.
