Young people have been taking part in a range of musical group sessions this week.

Talented young musicians from across the Highlands and further afield will entertain an audience in Ullapool on Friday.

The concert is set to take place after a week of music at Fèis Rois nan Deugairean.

After the last couple of years of cancelled live events being replaced by a successful series of online workshops and concerts, Fèis Rois, based in Dingwall, has been back in Ullapool this week for its annual music residential week open to young people in S1-6.

Young people from Tain to Tynecastle have been attending classes each day including fiddle, accordion, tin whistle, pipes, clarsach, keyboard, guitar, tune writing and group work as well as participating in cèilidhs, concerts, sessions and evening activities.

Their talent will be on display at a concert this Friday at the Macphail Centre, Ullapool and everybody is welcome to attend.

Tutors included a host of well-known musicians from across Scotland including Mairearad Green; HEISK band members, Sally Simpson and Catriona Hawksworth; fiddle player and Gaelic singer from Tain, Chloë Bryce; piper and wooden flute player, James Duncan Mackenzie; fiddle player, Sharon Hassan; musician and producer, Barry Reid; and Gaelic singer and clarsach player, Katie Mackenzie.

Fèis Rois chief executive, Fiona Dalgetty said: “After a difficult couple of years we are delighted to be able to get back to Ullapool for Fèis Rois nan Deugairean for the first time since 2019. It has been incredible to hear these fantastic young musicians and see them so keen to get back to in-person music classes and sessions – spontaneous music sessions have been happening every day and it has been a joy to see them enjoying music and song again.

“Usually our finale concert is only open to families of the participants however this year we have a smaller group of young musicians attending and we would like to offer locals and tourists in Ullapool the chance to hear what they’ve been working hard on all week; a great night of music and song is guaranteed!”

The concert will start at 7pm at the Macphail Centre, Ullapool. Entry is free however donations to Fèis Rois can be made on the night. For more information visit www.feisrois.org
