A GREEN-FINGERED former chef has the recipe for success when it comes to putting a smile on the faces of locals and visitors in Dingwall.

Allan Cameron (76) of the town’s Mill Street has been receiving plenty of compliments – and even letters of thanks – for his gardening efforts which have created a colourful display outside his home for everyone to enjoy.

Explaining how it all began he said: “I started gardening when I retired from being a chef. When I retired, I thought ‘I am just not ready for this yet’ and I started pottering about in the garden.”

He puts the secret of his blooming success down to his use of tomato fertiliser and is delighted that his work is so widely appreciated.

“I received a postcard from tourists, just with the name of the street on it, thanking me for the display,” he said.

“I have also been given donations towards seeds to keep me going.

“Really, I should be thankful for all the people who stop me and say how much they enjoy the garden.”

He added: “If it puts a smile on anyone’s face, then I am glad.

“Those of us that live alone are going through hell at the moment, so anything that brings a wee bit happiness is to be enjoyed.”
