UNDERSTANDING employers and community cohesion are key in helping steer through the coronavirus crisis as case numbers continue to fluctuate.

That's the view of Highland GP Ross Jaffrey who warned that the virus continues to circulate – as witnessed in a national jump in case numbers yesterday.

Dr Jaffrey, who has patients in Muir of Ord and Beauly, launched the Safe Hands, Saves Lives campaign at the start of the first lockdown to help inform the public and spread important health messages to try and slow the spread.

He posted: "Numbers have jumped up to their highest level in some time. Yesterday also declared the largest number of tests reported in one day since the 15th January. On that day 2160 tests were positive. We are three times lower. That is the difference between now and then - so don’t be too disappointed.

"We are getting on top of numbers but the virus is still circulating. Positive cases are dropping off significantly in the vaccinated cohorts and this is rapidly improving the hospital situation."

He advised: "Try to take your vaccination opportunity when invited. Hopefully employers will understand that appointments can be rather inflexible and are often allocated at very short notice. With more people working, we are relying on employers to let their staff attend clinics. Most up to this point have been very understanding. We need to work closely as a community and as a country to get things moving forward."

A dozen new cases of Covid-19 were recorded across the NHS Highland area yesterday.

The region’s cumulative number of confirmed infections rose from 4940 to 4952 when the Scottish Government published the latest daily update.

Ten people were being treated for the coronavirus in NHS Highland hospitals – an increase of one from the previous day.

A total of 701 positive tests for the virus were recorded across Scotland in the past day.
