FIREFIGHTERS from Easter Ross were called out overnight to deal with an incident at Nigg.

On what has been a busy weekend for staff with the Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service, firefighters from Tain and Invergordon were scrambled at attend Nigg Energy Park on Saturday night.

Service chiefs say that fire was reported to be seen coming from a gas cylinder located within a cage on the quayside.

The HIFRS said it was dealing with "a protracted incident" at the energy park, which has recently become the focus for a major long-term jobs and industry regeneration programme.

The incident prompted a full response from the service and firefighters set up a 200metre exclusion zone.

The service had earlier dealt with a fatal road accident at Carrbridge and have also been involved in assisting following a series smash on the Drumnadrochit to Cannich road.

The Nigg fabrication site on the Cromarty Firth was successfully purchased by Global Energy Group (GEG) in October 2011 with £1.8m funding package from HIE to help transform the largely dormant site into a multi-use modern energy park.

GEG announced the completion of the sale from American company KBR and the Wakelyn Trust. The purchase paves the way for ambitious plans to develop the 238 acre site servicing the energy industry, including oil and gas and renewables.

The company expects around 2000 people to be employed on the site by 2015.

We'll update this story later.
