A team of Evanton shop workers from the Co-op are going above and beyond for their most vulnerable customers.

The 12-strong team at the store on Balconie Street volunteer their own time to deliver shopping to customers unable to leave their homes during the coronavirus lockdown. The store are now doing up to nine deliveries a day and have walked a cumulative 74,000 steps – and counting – in their bid to help.

The local community have also got involved and volunteered to do some deliveries to help the busy store.

Stephen Scott, Co-op store manager, said: “The team and I really wanted to do something to help our most vulnerable customers. We often take the shopping on our way home after work but we really don’t mind. We recently asked the community to help with some deliveries as it was quite a busy day and we were amazed by the response – it’s about pulling together at this time. I really can’t thank my team and the community volunteers for their support. They are local heroes.”

Jo Whitfield, Co-op Food CEO said: “Every day we are seeing outstanding acts of kindness as communities pull together to support those who are struggling, and our amazing Co-op members and customers tell us they want to help to support their communities and do right by those in greatest need.”

In partnership with FareShare, Co-op has created a new charity TV ad which is a tribute to the local heroes who are playing their part in feeding the nation during the Coronavirus crisis. The advert highlights the new scheme which helps and encourages customers to support food banks by either donating in-store or via a text to a dedicated number, both of which will boost the £1.5million of food Co-op has already pledged to FareShare.
