Easter Ross photographer aims to “capture the essence of growing up in the Highlands” for a new project titled Seaboard.
Lily Skye MacDonald, originally from Balintore and now a student at Edinburgh Napier University, aims to capture the essence of young people’s experiences of growing up in the Highlands and give them a voice.
In the Seaboard project, Lily has been working closely with Youth Highland, a charity that supports young people with youth work across the region.

Seaboard, through the medium of fashion photography, aims to capture the natural beauty of the Highlands and explore the hopes and dreams of the young people who call it home.
One of the young participants shared their feelings about Seaboard, saying: “I love everything about it! Being outside and exploring fashion!“
The young participants in the project have been learning new skills, developing their creativity and building connections with their peers. Already, youngsters have been gaining confidence and a sense of empowerment from being involved in the Seaboard project.
A parent of one of the participants said: “I love the idea of getting the youth involved with fashion from someone coming back to the village, and showing the girls what they can achieve.”
However, Lily and Youth Highland are keen to push the impact of the project further by reaching a wider audience. The work is set to be exhibited in Lily’s end-of-year degree show at Edinburgh Napier and London’s Free Range Exhibition.
Chief officer of Youth Highland, Clair Nichols stated: “It is important to support young people to lead their own projects in Highland communities, giving them a sense of ownership and empowerment.
“We are really excited to be supporting Lily to carry out a project in her home community in the Highlands. She is an inspiration to the young people - showing them that by using creative skills they can transform their view of themselves and their community.”
