AN Easter Ross man unicycling around the North Coast 500 to raise awareness of what he believes to be a game-changing approach to treating alcohol dependency met another hardy soul who knows a thing or two about pedal power on a single wheel...

Bruce Rose (55) has been toughing it out against the elements and plenty of uphill struggles to raise awareness of The Sinclair Method, a way of reducing alcohol dependency using an NHS-licensed medication called Naltrexone alongside a one-to-one programme targeted at individual alcoholics.

One man wheely aware of the challenges involved is Bryan Davies (75) who lives near Tongue on the north coast – he unicycled from Land’s End to John O’ Groats in the 1980s.

Bryan, hooked on unicycles as a teenager, contacted us when he heard about Bruce’s effort, offering to provide him with tips and support. The former engineer and Merchant Navy man has also ridden in Africa.

Bryan showed Bruce some of the photos from his epic unicycle trip in the 1980s.

Bruce said: “He was an amazing man, very humble and kind and brought along his photographs of his amazing trip. We managed to get some some time together talking about unicycling and all the challenges of riding one wheel up and downhill and for any distance with a crosswind.”

He has also been buoyed along the way by his support team, sponsors and people, like Bryan, who have offered words of encouragement. He hopes to make it to Inverness – via John O’ Groats – on Saturday, October 16 all being well.

He said: “We have definitely made an impact for raising awareness for The Sinclair Method (TSM). Our aim was to raise £10,000 and we are are about 65 per cent to that total at the moment.”
