The heroic dogs of Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) have been saluted for their life-saving work, to celebrate International Search and Rescue Dog Day.

Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA), is a charity part of the Scottish which trains dogs and their handlers to search for missing people.

On the last Sunday in April every year, International Search and Rescue Dog Day is celebrated – prompting Dundonnell MRT to highlight the bravery of their own pooches.

Rhona, Meg and Skye are the three SARDA dogs in the Wester Ross-based voluntary life-saving service.

Heroic pooches Meg and Rhona are actually siblings, having both come from the same litter. Rhona was initially graded back in November 2020, and loves giving rescued persons a big face lick when she finds them.

Dundonnell MRT said: “Happy International Search and Rescue Dog Day! Here at Dundonnell MRT we’re extremely proud to have three SARDA dogs; Rhona, Meg and Skye.”

In 2022, Scottish SARDA dogs responded to over 30 incidents, and worked over 650 hours.

The dogs have been trained to use their acute sense of smell to detect human scent in the air, making the dog and their handler a highly efficient team. SARDA dogs not only support the Mountain Rescue, but also help the police to search for vulnerable missing people.
