A welder has been banned from driving for more than a year after being caught with drugs in his system.

Sheriff Sara Matheson said Samuel Cowie (29) had an "appalling driving record", including recent speeding offences, when he appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court.

Cowie had admitted to a charge of being over the limit for having benzoylecgonine in his system.

The court heard he was pulled over by police during a routine stop on the A9 near the Tore roundabout but was found to appear "nervous" when officers were speaking to him.

A drugs test was carried out and he was found to have 69 microgrammes of the drug metabolite per litre of blood.

The legal driving limit is 50 microgrammes.

Defence agent David Patterson said his client offered "no excuse" for having taken recreational drugs before being stopped by police on April 10, 2021.

Cowie, of Carnegie Court, Bonar Bridge, Sutherland, was disqualified from driving for 16 months by Sheriff Matheson as well as being fined £360.
