Garden waste collection is not a statutory duty for Highland Council prompting the permit system costing £47.75 a year. The service stops for three months in winter.

ROSS-SHIRE residents using Highland Council's brown bin garden waste collection service are being reminded of an important date in the calendar.

The garden waste collection service will soon stop for the winter break with final collections of the year are on Thursday, November 30.

The paid-for service resumes again on Friday, March 1, 2024.

Highland Council said: "During the winter you can take your garden waste to your local household waste recycling centre. We would also encourage householders to compost garden waste at home wherever possible."

Recycling centre details can be found here www.highland.gov.uk/recyclingcentres.

EXPLAINED: Everything you need to know about changes to Highland Council bin collections

Households making use of the brown bin collection fork out £47.75 a year per year per bin for the council service.

There are no concessions or reduced rates.

The service runs from September 1 to August 31 each year with a winter break in December, January and February. It is not a statutory service and is therefore not included in council tax.

Some householders have taken to social media to voice their views that the service should continue year round.

One described it as "beyond crazy".

But another defended the move, stating: "Many people would have little use for the service in the winter, so would be paying for nothing, while you would pay for the additional weeks you would use it. The Recycling Centres are open all year round.
