Police Scotland are raising awareness of the issue of fuel theft

Police in the Highlands are raising awareness of the problem of fuel theft – and how to safeguard against it.

The Scottish force is aware that criminals continue to target domestic fuel supplies, [particularly in rural areas where households often maintain their own tanks within garden areas.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "Fuel thefts remain a widespread issue within our communities, but there are ways to minimise the risk."

Tips offered by the force to help avoid becoming a victim of fuel theft include:

• Consider installing and using lockable gates or sheds and perimeter fencing.

• Plant shrubs or install fencing to hide exposed domestic heating oil tanks.

• Fit a locking cap to your heating oil tank, and consider keeping your tank inside a security gate or cage.

• Install automatic movement sensor security lighting where you keep your tanks and the surrounding area.

• Check tank oil levels regularly

•Note suspicious vehicle registration numbers and report them to the police via 101.

• Thieves may return after you've replaced your stolen fuel - be vigilant following a delivery.

• Consider fitting an alarm system that notifies you if fuel is being drained from the tank.

The spokesman added: "Report any suspicious activity, or those involved, to Police Scotland by calling 101. In an emergency, call 999."
