A Dingwall trainee church minister, who lives with two chronic health conditions, is set to face “his biggest fear” for charity.

“Never let anyone write you off”, that’s Tommy MacGregor’s approach to living with spina bifida and hydrocephalus – two complex health conditions with chronic effects.

It’s this positive approach to life that has inspired the 46-year-old trainee Church of Scotland Minister from Dingwall to take on his fear of heights, and abseil 131ft down the King’s Tower at the King’s Church in Aberdeen on Saturday May 25.

Tommy said: “Heights has always been one of my biggest fears. But I’ve decided to challenge myself, because my approach to life has always been to try things and to never let anyone write me off.

“Throughout my life people have assumed that I would be unable to do things because of my spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

“I was told I’d struggle with education, yet I’ve been to university and have several degrees. They said I wouldn’t get a job and I’ve built a career in the NHS. Now I’m about to follow my passion to become a Church of Scotland Minister.”

Tommy continued: “The reality is that my disability allows me to overcome things and think of solutions that others wouldn’t.

“The support of charities like SBH Scotland is so important. The work they do to challenge perceptions and give people vital support is incredible. Please give what you can to fund their vital work.”

Chief executive of SBH Scotland, Lawrence Cowan said: “At SBH Scotland our mission is to make sure that everyone with spina bifida and hydrocephalus feels unstoppable.

“Tommy is the very definition of our mission. His story is truly inspiring.

“We need to raise £1.5 million a year to fund vital support for people with spina bifida and hydrocephalus right across Scotland, so I hope everyone gets behind Tommy’s incredible fundraising efforts.”
