PLANS to replace the unsafe roof on Dingwall’s closed public swimming pool are being recommended for approval.

The application for the replacement £600,000 pitched roof over the pool, cafe and fitness suite area at Dingwall Leisure Centre will come before the Ross, Skye and Lochaber planning committee meeting on Tuesday.

The Highland Council-run facility was forced to close on safety grounds at the end of March following the discovery of a cracked roof beam above the pool.

It later emerged that a completely new roof was needed at the pool which is widely used by residents, schools and clubs in the Dingwall catchment area.

Local councillors have already said that, subject to planning approval, work should begin in September and be completed by February. The pool will remain closed until that time.

The proposal is to replace the existing roof over the swimming pool, viewing area, café and fitness suite. The existing games hall roof will not be affected.

The new roof will be pitched, with the gables pointing towards the entrance foyer and the car park. It will use Kingspan profile metal roofing panels and will incorporate rooflights.

The roof will be the highest point of the building and councillors will be told on Tuesday that increasing the height of the recently-installed biomass flue stack is one of the options that will be investigated to ensure the adequate dispersion of flue gas.

The report to the planning committee concludes by saying, "The principle of re-roofing the swimming pool to bring it back into use as soon as possible is to be welcomed."
