A MUSICIAN who has shared his experience with generations of pipers, helping maintain a rich Highland tradition, has received an honour.

Donald Armstrong was named earlier as recipient of a British Empire Medal for services to Music and to the community in Dingwall.

For over 51 years he has been a playing member and long-standing president of the Dingwall Royal British Legion Pipe Band, leading the band in many civic and local events, including galas, fairs and Armistice Day remembrance parades.

He has been responsible for teaching nearly all of the band players over the years, so it was through his selfless voluntary contribution, together with his talent as a musician, that the Dingwall Royal British Legion Pipe Band flourished for decades.

Over the past quarter of a century, he gave his time freely and gladly, to introduce, encourage and teach firstly the chanter and then the bagpipes to school children at Strathpeffer and Resolis primary schools.

His teaching and his dedication shown towards these young students has encouraged not only excellence with the bagpipes, but has also enhanced their confidence, self-belief and discipline immeasurably.

His efforts have been key to keeping this musical and cultural tradition alive in this part of the Highlands. It is fair to say that without his ceaseless and continuing input it would not be in the healthy position it is today.
