A Highland League footballer was shown the red card by a Sheriff when he was sent off the road for a year.

Cohen Ramsay, a 24 year old defender with title chasing Buckie Thistle, appeared at Inverness Sheriff Court and admitted driving while almost twice the legal limit in Dingwall on July 23 last year.

His reading was 38mcgs of alcohol when the maximum is 22mcgs.

Fiscal depute Karen Poke told Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald that a police officer stopped Ramsay of Seaforth Place, Maryburgh on Greenhill Street, Dingwall about 9.30am and immediately smelt alcohol off him.

Defence solicitor Marc Dickson said: "He was separated from his girlfriend the night before and some of his friends took him out.

"He got quite drunk and stopped drinking just after midnight. He felt okay to drive in the morning.

"This was a significant error of judgement. He accepts he is the author of his own misfortune," Mr Dickson added.

Fining Ramsay £500, Sheriff Macdonald told him: "This is an expensive lesson you have learnt."

She certified the care worker as suitable to participate in the drink drive rehabilitation scheme which, if he successfully completes it, will earn him a three months discount on his disqualification.
