DINGWALL has again been hit by flash floods – on the eve of a public meeting set up in the wake of an earlier incident last month.

Fire appliances were were directed to assist with flood mitigation measures in Dingwall this evening as the area was battered by torrential rain in the early evening, with a number of people reporting seeing lightning strikes.

An appliance from Invergordon Fire Station was redirected to the county town at around 4.39pm to try and divert floodwater.

Dingwall-based Elisa de Waal, coordinator of the Highland Aspiring Communities Project posted footage on Twitter showing the scale of the rainfall which quickly gathered on the road surface around the town and in several other areas including Pefferside Park. She wrote: "The rain in Dingwall is quite insane, hope residents had some sandbags!"

Another tweeter, Fiona MacArthur wrote: "Wow! That was some thunderstorm in Dingwall. Hope there's not more flooding."

There had earlier been weather warnings about the likelihood of thunder, lightning and heavy rain."

Dingwall Community Council shared photographs of flooding.

A number of powercuts have also been reported in the Highlands.

Ironically, a multi-agency drop-in meeting is due to be held in the Dingwall Council Offices on Tuesday evening to discuss the last such flash-flood incident on July 10.

Then, it was reported that a months' worth of rainwater fell in an hour.

Highland Council chief executive Donna Manson acknowledged in a letter to residents that the Victorian drainage system in Dingwall "is unable to cope with such extreme conditions".

Dingwall is part o a flood study. The council says it plans bidding in to a Scottish Government fund for flood mitigation measures.

Met Office weather warnings are in place for several parts of the Highlands, amongst them Dingwall and Ullapool.
