PUPILS at an Easter Ross secondary school were challenged to make a tenner grow by setting up their own enterprises and turning a profit.

And the Alness Academy students did themselves proud by rising to the Young Enterprise 'Tenner Challenge' at the school's first ever open market.

The challenge takes place over four weeks and sees participants lent the initial £10. They can choose to work as individuals or club together and work in groups. Their challenge is simple: make and sell products to earn their £10 back – and any extra profit they get to keep.

Eleven pupils, split into five businesses to make and sell their products.

These ranged from jewellery to art work. And every group was successful in making a profit.

Proud business reacher Emma Maclennan said: "Next year we hope to come back bigger and better, and try it with a whole year group."

The winning team was NH Jewellery comprised of S4 students, Nicole and Hania. They made a profit of £33.41 which they have opted to donate to an animal charity.
