One of the longest-established restaurants in the Highland capital will stay open after it was acquired by a city businesswoman.

Castle Restaurant in Castle Street, which first opened in 1957, was set to close yesterday, with the impact of the coronavirus crisis being a major factor.

But the venue has been saved due to new management.

Previous owners Richard and Lorraine Comfort stated: "I am pleased to tell you that a local businesswoman is going to take over from us and keep the Castle [Restaurant] open.

"So, business as usual from next week.

"Thank you for all your lovely messages and support.

"We will continue to operate at Comfort Foods and wish all the Castle staff all the best for this new chapter."

Operators of the Jammy Piece in Inverness have stepped in.

A statement from the business, which has built a positive reputation for its food at sites near the Caledonian Canal and in the Eastgate Shopping Centre, said: "Yes it's true, we are delighted to confirm we are taking over the Castle Street restaurant.

"Could there be a better match?

"A bit of a shake up on the menu but all the favourites are staying including the crinkle-cut chips. We're not that brave...

"There's no doubt, these are tough times but we are up for the challenge and the best news is, Castle staff are staying.

"Won't make any promises other than commitment and hard graft (plus JP craic).

"Covid-19 and bollards won't stop us!"
