A LOCAL councillor is calling for a "happy medium" when it comes to people putting up warning signs in the area.

Councillor Ian Cockburn, who serves the Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh ward, says that over the top vigilante signs are too much, and the community simply needs to "obey the rules".

Mr Cockburn, the joint leader of the SNP group at Highland Council, was responding to home-made road signs popping up over the Black Isle, telling people to stay away.

One sign that appeared at the bottom of the Lochussie road, near Dingwall, read "Covid-19 lockdown, if you do not live here GO HOME. You are not welcome."

Cycling groups have condemned the sign saying as far as they are concerned people still have the right to cycle as part of their daily exercise.

Mr Cockburn said: "People have got to obey the rules but we can't take it to the other extreme and allow over-the-top vigilante groups to take matters into their own hands.

"We need a happy medium, and the best advice is just to obey the rules."

John Stott, chairman of Knockbain Community Council said he was not particularly aware of any signs. He said: "People who live in the area should be allowed to get out for their daily exercise whether that is walking or cycling."
