Covid-19 update

THERE was a sharp fall in the number of Highlanders requiring hospital treatment for the coronavirus overnight, despite another increase in Covid-19 cases across the region.

At midnight last night there were only 11 patients receiving treatment for suspected or confirmed coronavirus in the region's hospitals – down 33 in just 24 hours.

But the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the region broke through the 300 mark after a further eight diagnoses took the overall total to 307.

The figures came against the backdrop of 177 new cases across Scotland as a whole, which has now returned 12,437 positive tests since the pandemic first began.

The national death toll also rose a further 44 to 1620, three of whom have sadly passed away as a result of the coronavirus hotspot at Home Farm care home on Skye, which confirmed its latest fatality this morning.

Across Scotland as a whole, there were 1656 people with either confirmed or suspected Covid-19 in the country's hospitals last night – down from 1720 on Monday.

However, there was a minor rise in the number of them in intensive care - up to 104 from 99 the previous day.

Elsewhere, in the north of Scotland there continues to be no newly-diagnosed cases of Covid-19 in Eileanan Siar, Orkney or Shetland.

NHS Grampian reported a further 15 cases to edge towards 1000 on 946. But there was a large fall in the number of hospital patients needing treatment for the virus, which was down from 130 to 97. Thirteen of whom were in intensive care.

And NHS Tayside recorded another 18 positive test results, to take its tally since the outbreak began to 1429. But it too recorded a large fall in hospitalised cases, which more than halved from 92 to 44 in the past 24 hours.
