A labourer was stopped by police in his car as he drove at excessive speed through a Ross-shire village.

But Inverness Sheriff Court was told that officers could smell alcohol from 24-year-old Daniel Stewart and a breath test showed he was almost three times the legal drink drive limit.

His reading in Muir of Ord on July 15, 2020 was 59mcgs of alcohol when the limit is 22mcgs.

Stewart was arrested and taken to Burnett Road Police Station where he took exception to the way he was being dealt with by an officer and struggled with him, the court was told.

Stewart of Gilbert Court, Inverness, admitted careless driving, resisting arrest and driving with excess alcohol.

Defence solicitor John MacColl said: "He foolishly took the car when he should not. Then there was a brief resist."

Stewart was banned from driving for 16 months and fined a total of £840.
