Taxi fares look set to rise - but not by as much as the trade wanted.

TAXI fares are expected to rise by less than the trade wanted after licensing bosses rejected calls for a bigger increase.

Councillors on the Highland Licensing board have backed a rise in some fares but said the lowest price tariff should go up from £2.50 to £2.70.

The Scottish average for this tariff is £2.74 but there were calls from the taxi trade for it to be increased to £3 in Highland.

The committee said peak time fares should go up from £3 to £3.30 and from £3.60 to £3.90.

The draft tariff will go out to public consultation this week

and the deadline for submissions will be June.

The committee will discuss the results of the consultation in August and any increases will come into effect in mid-late September, depending on whether there is an appeal to the traffic commissioner.

Under the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982, the council must review its fare scales every 18 months.
