Councillor for Tain and Easter Ross, Maureen Ross has praised the efforts of a crew of clean-up volunteers in Balintore after eight skips of bulk item waste and litter were cleared from the local area.

Plans to organise a 'community clean-up' around the Seaboard villages were first raised at a meeting of Balintore and District Residents' Group last November when the issue of fly tipping and waste spoiling the local area was raised.

Members of the public from primary school age to senior citizens took part in the initiative, which organisers say covered an area from the "Shandwick stone to the Hilton stone" – and everything in between.

Cllr Maureen Ross said: "Litter and fly tipping is such a scourge, blighting the environment and our communities.

"The work and efforts done by the volunteers during the recent ‘clean-up’ in Balintore has been phenomenal.

"I saw for myself the vast amount of household rubbish which had been dumped outside houses and up alleyways whilst doing a walkabout with members of the Balintore and District Residents Group and council officials, way back in October.

"The support gained by the community from Morrison Construction Community Action Programme has been welcomed, and well done to those who managed to secure this for the community.

"A fantastic community effort and great initiative.”

Morrison Construction, as part of their Community Action Programme, provided skips, transport, PPE and litter picking equipment for the volunteers.

The local Scout Hall also opened its doors and provided refreshments and toilet facilities.

Alastair Gill, of Balintore and District Residents' Group, said: "It was a fantastic day, well supported by the local adults and children.

"We removed enough bulk item waste to fill eight skips, and filled over twenty black bags of general litter.

"A huge difference was made in the local area with everybody commenting how great everyone pulled together and lent a helping hand."
