Police have raised alarm over another phone scam in Ross-shire

HIGHLAND cops have blown the whistle on yet another telephone scam uncovered in Ross-shire.

Householders in the Kyle of Lochalsh area raised the alarm over the scheme whereby people are contacted by a company claiming to be involved with payment protection insurance (PPI) paybacks.

Residents are being told the company can successfully secure thousands of pounds for them if they discover they were wrongfully sold the insurance with an old loan.

The individual is then asked to pay hundreds of pounds via gift voucher or UKASH voucher upfront to cover the false company’s “commission”.

Northern Constabulary warned yesterday the telephone number provided, 0208 1336471, “is widely found on the internet connected with various frauds of the above nature that have occurred in the United Kingdom”.

The force said in a statement, “There are legitimate companies which offer this service, but be aware that bonafide companies never ask for cash up front.

Any company who does ask for cash up front should be avoided.”
