ROSS-SHIRE bowlers returning to the green under strict social distancing guidelines took time out to pay tribute to one of their former members this week.

Conon/Maryburgh Outdoor Bowling Club members made a tentative return to the green, following social distancing guidelines and with a strict booking system in place.

Volunteers who have worked hard maintaining the green were given the honour of the first session with Mrs Anne Reid throwing the first jack.

Beforehand, a minute's silence was observed in memory of the late Liz Low, a former member who died last month. Ms Low won 17 club trophies in her time amongst a number of other honours.

Anne Reid said on the club's Facebook page: "It was a pleasure to throw the first jack. A big thank you goes out to our president Brian who has worked so hard organising it all. We all had a very enjoyable time playing our first game."

President Brian Campbell said that while it was strange playing under the new guidelines, everyone understood the reasons.

A maximum of eight players can be on the green at any one time.

The clubhouse is closed.

He said: "To see the faces coming off the green smiling was nice. It will be non-competitive this season. It's more about getting out and mental wellbeing. We will wait for phase two of the plan from the government. We will tread carefully."

This wasn't how the club anticipated marking its 30th anniversary but Mr Campbell said: "We're thankful for what we have got. It would be lovely to get back to normal but everyone realises the situation. We are not complaining."

Anyone wanting to book a slot to play should do so through George Stewart.
