FOUR new cases of the Covid-19 coronavirus have been confirmed in the NHS Highland area since yesterday.

The region's health board has now recorded 328 positive tests in the region since the outbreak began.

The slight increase came as the number of positive tests across Scotland passed the 14,000 mark. There were 188 newly-confirmed cases across Scotland in the past day – to take the overall tally to 14,117. The true number of infections is believed to be much higher.

A further 34 people who tested positive have died, taking the number of fatalities among confirmed cases of Covid-19 to 2007.

But there was better news among Scottish hospital patient numbers – which saw the number of people with suspected or confirmed Covid-19 falling to 1480 from yesterday's tally of 1534.

The number of those in intensive care remained almost the same, rising just one to 71.

In NHS Highland there were only five people receiving hospital treatment for confirmed coronavirus at midnight last night.

Elsewhere in the north, there were once again no new cases of the virus confirmed in Eileanan Siar, Orkney or Shetland.

NHS Grampian returned just 19 additional positive tests, to take its overall tally to 1142. There were slight increases in the number of hospital cases and intensive care patients, which rose to 98 and 11 respectively.

And NHS Tayside saw 25 newly-confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. Some 25 people were also receiving treatment for the virus in its hospitals – down two in 24 hours.
