Significant numbers of S5 and S6 pupils are failing to progress after 4th year.

DISAPPOINTING attainment levels among 16 to 18-year-olds at Tain Royal Academy need to be tackled, according to the Highland Council’s head of education.

"Significant numbers" of S5 and S6 pupils are failing to progress in a range of subjects after a good performance in S4, a new report has revealed.

The paper shows boys’ higher grades, in those sitting the exam across three or more subjects, were the lowest for five years. Performance for pupils in S6, at advanced higher, is well below national average, with no pupils taking biology, chemistry or maths last year.

The school’s French, History, Geography and Technical departments perform strongly, however, and a new faculty leader with specialist knowledge and qualification in maths is already demonstrating a "clear vision" for the school.

Jim Steven, the council’s head of education, said work was getting underway to help motivate S5 and S6 pupils to do better.

"When they are in S4 those pupils delivered a fairly decent performance but that has not been delivered in results in S5 and S6 and there is some work to be done in and around that. Tain is not quite coming up to where we want them to be," he said.

The matter was debated by members of the Skye, Ross and Cromarty Area Committee in Dingwall yesterday (Wednesday).
