A SUTHERLAND community minibus has been involved in a road accident, it has been reported.

Councillor Richard Gale, a board member of development group Go Golspie, said the group’s minibus had had a “close encounter” with a deer in the Rogart area a week ago.

NatureScot has said that collisions between deer and vehicles could be as high as 9,000 a year in Scotland.

Speaking at Monday night’s meeting of Golspie Community Council, Cllr Gale praised the evasive actions taken by the driver, a former police officer, which he said had prevented too much damage from being caused.

It is understood the bumper on the near side of the vehicle was damaged.

Concern at the number of deer roaming in the Rogart area was raised with Rogart Community Council in June last year.

The community council received an email from a local resident who said large numbers of deer were presenting a road safety issue.

She wrote: “We never used to experience these numbers so close to roads and crofts.”
