NHS Highland is seeking to recruit two lay members to the Highland Health and Social Care Committee.

Experience of caring for a family member is a key attribute for one of the positions.

Ann Clark, chairwoman of the committee, said: “The committee has a wide range of responsibilities for health and social care services across the Highland Council area and it is essential that we have the public’s input to the decisions it makes.

"It is important to hear the views of the people who use our services alongside those of clinicians, managers and partners. I would encourage patients, carers and members of the public who have an interest in how we run NHS Highland to consider applying.”

Michael Simpson, who is currently a lay member of the committee said: “Successful applicants will read and comment on written reports and contribute to debate during committee meetings. However the most important qualification is an interest in improving health and social care services across the region.

"If you are passionate about health and social care, feel you can contribute and have a voice on behalf of your community, please do apply for this position."

The committee meets six times a year in the afternoons, for around three hours. The work involves reading committee papers in advance and attending occasional, informal meetings held in the morning of committee meeting days. The committee meetings are webcast and held in public, usually in Inverness, but occasionally elsewhere in Highland.

The roles are voluntary posts, but NHS Highland will ensure that appropriate travel and accommodation arrangements are made on members’ behalf and any necessary costs are reimbursed. An induction programme and on-going support will be provided.

For further details, or to discuss the role with the chairwoman of the committee, email Ruth Daly, NHS Highland’s Board Secretary ruth.daly@nhs.net or write to her at NHS Highland, Assynt House, Beechwood Park, Inverness, IV2 3BW.

The closing date for completed applications is September 23.
