EMOTIONAL museum staff in Ullapool have spoken of their delight after they saw off the challenge of sites across the British Isles to win a UK-wide award.

Ullapool Museum has won a £2500 cash windfall after the work undertaken by its volunteers was recognised this week in an awards ceremony in London.

They won a ‘Volunteers in Museum Learning Award’, which was presented to them by the British Museum and The Marsh Christian Trust.

The award celebrates the achievements and contribution of volunteers in museums, galleries and heritage sites all over the United Kingdom.

It also recognises their dedication, innovation and excellence in engaging with their visitors.

After being recognised as regional winners for Scotland, the team at Ullapool Museum were also declared overall national winners.

Its team were delighted, tweeting: “Wowee! An emotional bunch collected this super award this afternoon – regional and national winners.

“We have brilliant volunteers. All the winners were really great.”

The ‘Volunteers for Museum Learning’ award forms part of a programme of awards presented by the Marsh Christian Trust in the fields of science, ecology, conservation, heritage, literature and volunteering.

There were a large number of applications from both groups of volunteers and individuals, from across the UK.

The judges consisted of staff from the Marsh Christian Trust, supported by staff and volunteers from the British Museum.

Brian Marsh, the chairman of the Marsh Christian Trust said “We are very pleased to have been working with the British Museum for the past 10 years to recognise volunteers from museums across the UK who work hard to engage and educate the public.

“We are conscious of the value that these volunteers bring, both to the museums they dedicate their time to and to the visitors whose experiences they enhance.

“We hope to continue to celebrate them for many years to come.”

Ullapool Museum won £500 from the Marsh Christian Trust after being named as regional winners, and also secured a further £2000 for securing the national title as well.

A wide array of museums across the UK were recognised by the awards – ranging from electric railways to fusiliers, and from religious sites to those exploring industrial heritage.
