IT has been quite the week for an Alness schoolgirl who is celebrating an impressive double.

Alness Academy pupil Sophie Hynd picked up the prestigious Youth Volunteer of the Year Award at the Highland Third Sector Awards and capped it all by being named head girl at Alness Academy.

The accolade was in recognition of her volunteer work at local youth group, The Place, which includes helping devise a play scheme during the Easter school holidays.

She previously said of her work: "I have volunteered for The Place since 2018. Play scheme is always my favourite time of year – it enables me to do something worthwhile during my holidays. The planning of Easter Play scheme was a completely new challenge for myself because I was given the role of the coordinator to plan, develop and deliver it.

"I’m entirely grateful to work within such a remarkable organisation which has ultimately helped shape the person I am today.”

The Place said: "Sophie Hynd is on a clean sweep! After her Saltire Award presentation two weeks ago she was jointly awarded the Highland Third Sector Interface Youth Volunteer of the Year.

"This, on the same day she was also told she had successfully interviewed for the position of Head Girl at Alness Academy. What a positive role model for her fellow pupils.

"We can’t adequately convey the impact she is having on the youngsters within our community but we, as a youth club, feel we are truly blessed to have her working with us on our projects. We know we only have her for another year before she spreads her wings and leaves us and makes her mark within the law profession."
