Care home action points despite good review

CARE home inspectors have called for a Ross-shire facility to implement a number of changes – despite giving it a good review.

Wyvis House, in Dingwall’s Station Road, is run by RDS Healthcare and can accommodate up to 50 people at a time.

The site caters for a mix of elderly, some of whom have dementia, mental health issues or physical and sensory impairments.

It was close to capacity with 48 tenants during a recent visit by the Care Inspectorate.

"We spoke individually with five people using the service and five relatives during the inspection visit. We received some mixed views from them, however, the majority of views we received were positive," said the inspector in their report.

"Overall, the outcomes for people experiencing care were good."

The report revealed that the quality of care and support were assessed as good, with the quality of the staff rated as "very good".

But it added a number of recommendations to improve things even further, including a need for the service to improve the way it involves residents when reviewing their planned care and how review information is recorded and shared.

It added that care staff should "ensure people who are prescribed emollients and creams as part of their planned care, receive them as prescribed". And it also mentioned the need for staff to follow administration and recording practices.

It encouraged RDS Healthcare to put arrangements in place to improve and monitor practice.

The report added: "Where people’s skin is at risk the information about how this is managed should be clearly recorded in the persons plan so all staff are carrying out preventative care in a consistent way.

"The management should ensure that people are supported with their mobility needs in a safe and planned way."
