A FIVE-year Ministry of Defence contract won by an IT firm in the Highlands is expected to create "many" new jobs in the region.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise has today welcomed the announcement of the major new contract win by Capgemini.

The contract is to provide information technology services to the MOD.

Charlotte Wright, HIE chief executive, said: “This great news from Capgemini really couldn’t have come at a better time. During this very difficult period for the economy, the company has competed very effectively for this contract at a UK level.

“This success is testament, not only to Capgemini’s approach to continuous growth and ambitions for the future, but to the skills and experience in IT outsourcing that exist in our region’s workforce.

“This news will strengthen Capgemini’s position as one of our region’s largest private sector employers.”

HIE said the deal is expected to create "many new jobs in the region".

Highlands and Islands Enterprise is an economic and community development agency responsible for implementing Scotland's economic strategy across a region that covers more than half the country.
