RNLI Kessock lifeboat has urged paddle boarders to check they are fully equipped in case of emergency.

The latest launch of North Kessock RNLI lifeboat sparked a plea to paddle boarders to ensure they take safety equipment with them before heading out into open water.

The lifeboat crew was requested to launch by HM Coastguard yesterday just before 12pm following a report of persons requiring assistance on a paddle board near Chanonry point.

A spokesperson for the Kessock lifeboat said: "The boat launched and made way to the location given by the coastguard and were met by two people on paddleboards who were somewhat surprised to see them.

"We offered assistance and some advice and were assured they’d be fine making their way back under their on steam. The lifeboat stayed around the area to ensure the paddle boarders were ok and when they were close enough to the shore the boat was stood down.

"We would urge all paddle board users to ensure they are fully equipped before heading out into open water.

"Please have a life jacket/buoyancy aid, a means of contact such as a mobile phone or VHF radio and look into tides and wind conditions before setting off.

"Remember these can be very changeable at this time of year and if you are in any doubt to your capabilities, please stay closer to the shore. "

Anyone witnessing someone in danger near the water is urged to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
