The Summer reading challenge has a fresh theme this year.

The teams working in High Life Highland’s libraries are looking forward to participating in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge in association with The Reading Agency.

The initiative, which this year sees a link with WWF, has adopted the theme of Wild World Heroes in 2021 with the hope that it will inspire even more children to explore ways of helping to save the planet.

Julie Corcoran, HLH’s principal libraries manager said: “We are really looking forward to his ‘environmentally friendly’ summer reading challenge, that will see six new heroes, created by award-winning children’s author and illustrator, Health McKenzie, face real-world environmental issues, such as, plastics pollution, nature loss and deforestation.

“The Reading Agency has set a national reach target of one million children to become engaged with the 2021 challenge – and the teams at High Life Highland’s libraries will be doing all they can to get children to participate in the initiative.

Julie explained: “The initiative, which nationally reaches over 700,000 children encourages, children aged from 4 – 11 years old to set themselves a reading challenge to help prevent the summer dip, while the children are out of school.

“Children across the Highlands can join the UK-wide challenge by picking up a free pack from their local library from Monday, June 28 or by visiting the website summerreadingchallenge.org.uk.”

Steve Walsh, chief executive of High Life Highland added: “Following the year or so that we’ve all had, it is really great to see the Summer Reading Challenge taking place across our libraries throughout the Highlands as a demonstration that our regular annual programmes are resuming.

“Reading is so important for a child’s confidence, education and development – but it is equally important that they just read for pleasure, and this is what the Summer Reading Challenge encourages.”

The Wild World Heroes Summer Reading Challenge 2021 will run throughout the UK during the months of June, July and August.
