TWO breweries from the Black Isle are in contention to be named the best in Britain after being shortlisted in the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Champion Beer of Britain competition.

The Black Isle Brewing Company in Munlochy – Scotland’s only organic brewery – and the Cromarty Brewing Company microbrewery, are among the eight Scottish breweries to have made the final 71-strong shortlist.

They are joined by fellow north Scottish representatives, Windswept Brewing of Lossiemouth, which was founded by two former RAF pilots, and Orkney’s Swannay Brewery.

The final round of judging for the champion will take place at this year’s Great British Beer Festival, which is being held on Tuesday, August 6 at Olympia London.

It follows a year of regional heats and local tasting panels across the UK.

Nick Boley, Champion Beer of Britain coordinator, said: “It is an incredibly exciting time for British brewers, and nowhere is this better reflected than in the Champion Beer of Britain competition, one of the most prestigious titles within the beer industry.

“It is anyone’s guess who will win the ultimate title this year,” he added.

Meanwhile, Cromarty Brewing Company has a number of ales in Aldi’s annual Scottish Beer Festival. Its Whiteout, Lager, Rogue Wave, Happy Chappy and Red Rocker are being sold in all Scottish Aldi stores.
