VANDALS who left a gaping hole in the roof of an Applecross landmark are being sought by police.

The thatched roof of the Applecross Roundhouse was targeted sometime overnight between Saturday evening and Sunday morning – the same weekend as the community’s popular Highland Games.

"We are appealing for information following damage having been caused to the thatched roof," said a police spokesman.

"People are believed to have been on the roof which has caused a hole that will cost the local community money to repair."

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh ward councillor Ian Cockburn said he was "disappointed" to hear about the vandalism.

"I just wish people would take more care and look at the environment they are in and show respect for that environment," he said.

"We seem to get this sort of thing all over now. People have a disregard for historical type buildings and things like that. They don’t seem to realise how long they have stood there.

These things have to be kept up and respected."

The response among the public to news of the vandalism has been scathing, with residents and visitors voicing their anger at the "senseless" and "dreadful" behaviour.

"How sad after all the hard work people put into this," said Heather Teale. "Such a shame that people visiting our beautiful community don’t seem to have any respect!"

Shona McCutcheon-Forbes added: "So disgusting. Some people have no respect.

"This is part of the community."

And Fiona Mackenzie said: "There’s a lot of this brainlessness about.

"Our signs at the Heritage Centre car park were bonfire fodder last week.

"Other wood around the bin area [was] also torn up for a fire. Selfish and senseless."

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident number NP/3229/18.
